Overview
A private GP consultation is an appointment with a general practitioner outside the standard NHS general practice pathway. People use private GP services for faster access, longer appointments, second opinions, travel advice, occupational health needs, or continuity with a particular clinic. Some services are clinic-based; others offer video, home visiting or membership models.
Private GPs are still medical doctors. In the UK they work within the same broad professional expectations as other doctors, but the business model, appointment length and which tests they can arrange same-day differ by provider. A private GP visit does not automatically replace your NHS GP registration, and important records should usually be shared with your NHS practice when clinically appropriate.
What happens in a consultation depends on the reason for attendance: history, examination, safety-netting advice, prescriptions where indicated, and referral for investigations or specialists when needed. Private GPs may arrange blood tests, imaging or onward private referrals; NHS pathways remain available when clinically appropriate.
Before booking, check clinician registration, appointment format, fees for the consultation and any extras (tests, letters, follow-ups), and how results or letters are communicated to your NHS GP.

Do I need to leave my NHS GP to see a private GP?

Can a private GP prescribe?
